If the root volume of your storage virtual machine (SVM, formerly known as Vserver) becomes unavailable and you have protected it with a set of load-sharing mirrors, the storage virtual machine (SVM) Root Volume Promotion workflow enables you to promote one of the mirrored volumes and then rename it to take the place of the original SVM source volume.
This workflow enables you to promote the root volume of an SVM with FlexVol volumes and not an Infinite Volume.
In the unlikely event that the SVM root volume becomes unavailable, NAS clients cannot mount the root of the namespace. To facilitate data access to the clients, you must replace the root volume by promoting one of the load-sharing mirror volumes, creating a replacement load-sharing mirror volume for the promoted volume, and then renaming the promoted volume to the original SVM root volume name.
The following sections provide details about the workflow and how to execute the workflow:
You must ensure that certain requirements are met before executing the storage virtual machine (SVM) Root Volume Promotion workflow. You must be a cluster administrator for executing this workflow.
NFSv4 clients are not supported with read-only load-sharing mirrors.
The storage virtual machine (SVM) Root Volume Promotion workflow enables you to replace the SVM root volume if it becomes unavailable by promoting one of the load-sharing mirror volumes and then renaming it to take the place of the original SVM source volume.
The workflow involves promoting one of the load-sharing mirror volumes, creating a replacement load-sharing mirror volume for the promoted volume, renaming the promoted volume to the original root volume name, establishing a SnapMirror relationship, and initializing the load-sharing mirror to create a baseline for the newly created load-sharing mirror volume, and then updating the load-sharing mirror set.
The following illustration displays the tasks involved in executing the workflow:
