Converting SnapMirror Relationship to SnapVault or Version-Flexible SnapMirror Relationship workflow

The Converting SnapMirror Relationship to SnapVault or Version-Flexible SnapMirror Relationship enables you to convert a SnapMirror relationship that uses block replication engine (BRE) to logical replication engine with storage efficiency (LRSE) for asynchronous disaster recovery.

In Data ONTAP 8.2.x clusters, the SnapMirror relationship uses BRE for asynchronous disaster recovery. SnapMirror functionality requires the destination controller to run a major clustered Data ONTAP version later than or the same version as the source controller. When you upgrade your controllers to a later version of clustered Data ONTAP, you must upgrade the replication in the destination controller before upgrading the source controller.

The version-flexible SnapMirror functionality in clustered Data ONTAP uses LRSE as the replication engine for nondisruptive replication. The Converting SnapMirror Relationship to SnapVault or Version-Flexible SnapMirror Relationship workflow automates the conversion of the replication engine from BRE to LRSE. This conversion enables you to perform an upgrade of any replication (source and destination) without missing any RPO.

Note: This workflow contains new dictionaries and you must reset the cm_storage scheme in WFA by using the following steps:
  1. Log in to WFA.
  2. Click Execution.
  3. Right-click the data source type that has cm_storage scheme, and then click Reset Scheme.

The following sections provide details about the workflow and how to execute the workflow:

Prerequisites for Converting SnapMirror Relationship to SnapVault or Version-Flexible SnapMirror Relationship workflow

You must ensure that certain requirements are met before executing the Converting SnapMirror Relationship to SnapVault or Version-Flexible SnapMirror Relationship workflow. You must be a cluster administrator for executing this workflow.

  • Your system must be running clustered Data ONTAP.
Note: This workflow is qualified to work with Data ONTAP 8.2 and later.
  • OnCommand Workflow Automation (WFA) 3.0 or later must be installed.
  • You must have added OnCommand Unified Manager 6.2 or later as a data source in WFA and obtained the latest Unified Manager data.
  • The cluster must be enabled with BRE-based data protection capability.
Note: BRE-based data protection capability is available only for Data ONTAP 8.2.x.
  • Source and destination clusters must be running clustered Data ONTAP 8.3 or later for LRSE-based disaster recovery.

What happens when you execute the Converting SnapMirror Relationship to SnapVault or Version-Flexible SnapMirror Relationship workflow

The Converting SnapMirror Relationship to SnapVault or Version-Flexible SnapMirror Relationship workflow enables you convert the SnapMirror relationship from BRE to LRSE by breaking and deleting the existing SnapMirror data protection (DP) relationship, creating a new SnapMirror relationship of type extended DP (XDP) with LRSE policies, and then resynchronizing the newly created SnapMirror relationship.

Note: The workflow does not include the verification procedure and cluster upgrade.

The following illustration displays the tasks involved in executing the workflow:

Executing the Converting SnapMirror Relationship to SnapVault or Version-Flexible SnapMirror Relationship workflow

Before you begin

  • The workflow pack must be downloaded from the Storage Automation Store.
  • You must have reviewed the prerequisites for executing the workflow.

About this task

You should have the following input parameters available for executing the workflow:

  • Destination cluster name
  • Existing DP relationship for migration
  • SnapMirror policy

Steps

  1. Log in to WFA by providing the necessary credentials.
  2. Click Portal > Data Protection > Converting SnapMirror Relationship to SnapVault or Version-Flexible SnapMirror Relationship.
Tip: You can use the filter () to locate the workflow.
  3. Click the Execute icon ().
The Execute Workflow ' Converting SnapMirror Relationship to SnapVault or Version-Flexible SnapMirror Relationship' dialog box is displayed.
  4. Select the destination cluster.
  5. Select the DP relationships for migration.
  6. Select the SnapMirror policy.
  7. Specify if you want to resynchronize the SnapMirror relationship with or without data preserved.
  8. Optional: Click Preview to validate your workflow before executing it.
  9. Click Execute.
You can also schedule the workflow for execution at a later date and time by selecting the Choose Date and Time for Execution check box.

After you finish

Verify the newly created SnapMirror relationship by running the snapmirror show -type XDP command from the Data ONTAP command-line interface (CLI).
